At the end of a long and demanding day, one of my favourite things to do is enjoy a long soak in the bath tub, more often than not accompanied by a glass of wine and flickering candle.
A hot soak in the tub helps relieve tension and soothe sore muscles, and it's one of the easier self care activities us mums can fit into our busy schedules.
What makes the experience even more magical is the addition of bath salts.
If you've ever purchased bath salts in the past, you know they can be quite pricey!
But did you know you can enjoy the benefits of high quality, all natural bath salts without spending a fortune? In this blog I'll show you how with a simple DIY recipe.
What are bath salts?
The term 'bath salts' typically refers to Epsom salt (magnesium sulphate), or other sea salts, designed to be used in the bath.
Some commercial varieties also contain essential oils, cornstarch or baking soda, and botanicals to enhance the experience, while others can be blended with cheap fillers and preservatives that are best avoided.
What are the health benefits?
It is believed that taking a bath with salts helps your body absorb magnesium, relieve aches and pains, reduce stress and soften your skin.
Frankly, as a busy mum, I just like the ritual of taking some much needed me time!

4 Ways to use Bath Salts
Take a bath
Dissolve 1 cup of bath salts in a tub of warm water help the crystals dissolve by swirling your hand through the water. Hop in and take a long, luxurious soak.
If you'd like to add aromatherapy to your experience, mix 10-15 drops of lavender essential oil with your bath salts, prior to adding them to the tub.
Soak your tootsies
Create a luscious foot soak by dissolving half a cup of bath salts in a shallow basin of warm water and soak your tired aching feet. This is a great way to soften your skin prior to a pedicure.
Once again, you can add essential oils like peppermint for rejuvenation to your foot soak. Simply add 5-10 drops of oil with your bath salts, prior to adding them to the basin.
Exfoliate and moisturise
Use bath salts to help exfoliate dry and cracked skin. Combine 2 tablespoons of bath salts with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and use as a body exfoliator.
Keep in mind Epsom salts are quite corse, so be gentle!
Give the gift of calm
Dress up a jar of homemade bath salts with a pretty label and ribbon, or pop them into a hamper for an unforgettable and heartfelt gift.
