Why choose an air fryer without nonstick coating?
Air fryers have become a much loved time-saving addition to many households, including ours, however there is speculation that this novel appliance and its nonstick coating could be negatively impacting our health.
That's because many air fryer models have internal components with nonstick coatings such as Teflon, which may release harmful chemicals when heated or ingested.
According to techradar.com the general consensus is that air fryers made after 2013 with nonstick coatings are safe to use as they will not contain the harmful Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). They recommend however, that consumers should err on the side of caution and check that their airfryers have a BPA/PFOA-free Teflon, stainless steel or ceramic coating.
Medical experts advise that in order to minimise the risk of ingesting potentially harmful nonstick coating from damaged/worn components, consumers should opt for an air fryer made from ceramic or stainless steel.
With this in mind, I opted to upgrade from my old air fryer to the Instant Pot Duo Crisp + Air Fryer to air fry without nonstick coating available from Amazon.com.au (AU readers) and Amazon.com (USA and other readers). Since then, Instant Pot has released a newer model, the Instant Pot Pro Crisp + Air Fryer which offers even more handy features.
The Instant Pot Duo Crisp + Air Fryer comes with a premium stainless steel inner cooking pot and the air fryer basket is made from aluminium with ceramic coating (BPA/PFOA/PTFE free).
You can also use the stainless steel Instant Pot Mesh Steamer Baskets for air frying, which are sold separately.
While there are other non-toxic air fryers on the market, none can rival the space saving convenience of the Instant Pot which offers air frying, pressure cooking, slow cooking, sauté, steaming, sous vide, warming, roasting, baking, grilling/baking and dehydrating all in 1 appliance. You can even make yogurt in this thing!
Why I love my Instant Pot Air Fryer without nonstick coating
- I am able to air fry with ceramic coated aluminium or stainless steel and avoid potentially toxic non-stick cookware.
- When I'm cooking meat I love how the inner stainless steel pot captures all the drippings so when I'm done I can switch to sauté mode and create a quick and easy sauce or gravy without worrying about the ingredients coming into contact with Teflon coating.
- It doesn't smoke or drip fat onto the kitchen counter like other air fryers I've used.
- When I'm done I can put the inner pot and air fryer basket straight into the dishwasher for a quick and easy clean up.
